The AV1 video codec gains broader hardware support
AV1 is the next-gen open-source royalty-free video codec created by the Alliance for Open Media ORG ( AOM ORG ), a group founded by Google ORG , Mozilla ORG , Cisco ORG , Microsoft ORG , Netflix ORG , Amazon ORG , and Intel ORG . Apple ORG is also a member.
We are finally seeing more hardware support for this codec. The new M3 PRODUCT chips from Apple ORG support AV1 decode. The iPhone 15 CARDINAL Pro and iPhone 15 CARDINAL
Pro Max PERSON also feature an AV1 hardware decoder.
The official Android 14 LAW Compatibility Definition makes support for AV1 mandatory. The Snapdragon ORG 8 Gen 2 chipset, widely used by Android ORG phones released in 2023 DATE , supports AV1.
With the exception of Microsoft Edge ORG , all browsers support AV1.
